HLUBOKA CHATEAU / THE TOWN OF CESKE BUDEJOVICE / CESKY KRUMLOV / THE UNESCO VILLAGE OF HOLASOVICE AND / OR THE TOWN OF TREBON

 

The almost fairy tale region of Southern Bohemia is situated about 2-hour-drive south of Prague. Driving trough the countryside enables us to admire small villages and towns, lakes full of fish and deep forests.

 

HLUBOKA CHATEAU

Our first stop in Southern Bohemia will be the Hluboka Chateau. It was built as a gothic fortress on a high rock to guard the valley of the Vltava River and later on it was rebuilt several times. The noble Schwarzenberg family rebuilt it at the end of 19th century in Gothic-Tudor revival style. It was inspired by Windsor Castle in England and from the outside it looks very similar but the interiors of Hluboka are entirely different. There are rich woodcarvings, designed by local craftsmen, collections of Flemish tapestries of a great value, fine collections of porcelain, ceramics, glass, historical furniture, paintings and last but not least, wonderful views from its windows.

 

THE TOWN OF CESKE BUDEJOVICE

Our stop in the town of Ceske Budejovice will show us the home of the original Budweiser beer. We will admire one of the nicest and largest squares in the Czech Republic adorned by baroque Town Hall, renaissance houses and the Black Tower. There is a great lunch restaurant with the best Budweiser beer here.

 

CESKY KRUMLOV

We continue to our today's destination - Cesky Krumlov. This very unique town is almost entirely preserved from the renaissance period. It was once the capital of the entire Southern Bohemia region and the stronghold of the family of the Lords of Roses. We visit the narrow historical streets adorned by many renaissance houses, the Old Town Hall situated on Market Square, a magnificent gothic church of St.Vitus where we can see tombs of the last members of the Lords of Roses’ family, other baroque churches and picturesque squares. Depending on our timing, we can visit the interiors of the Cesky Krumlov Castle. Situated on a high rock guarding the Vltava River, it was used for centuries as a residence of the Lords of Roses, the Eggenbergs and the Schwarzenbergs. Today it houses rich collections of furniture, pictures, china and historical artifacts. At least a walk through the outside courtyards of the castle is a must as you have a great view over the whole town from there. The castle gardens are also worth visiting and so is the very unique baroque theatre, the tour of which is really unforgettable. The Baroque Theatre of the Cesky Krumlov Castle dates back to the 17th century and represents a baroque stage in its mature form. Only one royal theatre in the world is comparable to the Krumlov baroque theatre, Swedish Drottningholm theatre near Stockholm from 1766. The Cesky Krumlov theatre was closed to the public from 1966 to 1997, and after the completion of a large part of the restoration it can be visited now. But opening times and the number of the visitors is very limited.

 

THE UNESCO VILLAGE OF HOLASOVICE

A small UNESCO heritage village of Holasovice is another possibility of what to see in this region. The whole village is just one large square but it is extremely picturesque and we can admire rural-baroque architecture from 18th and 19th century there. It is still one of the few unspoilt villages.

 

AND / OR THE TOWN OF TREBON

Another possible stop is the historical town of Trebon. Once it was a residence of the last member of the Lords of Roses family - Peter Vok. This quaint town can offer a charming square with a plague column, the Town Hall and renaissance houses and, of course, the Lords of Roses’ Chateau. We can admire the largest man-made lake in the Czech Republic called Svet (World) behind the chateau gardens.
